KINDRED HEALTHCARE OPENS NEW HOSPITAL IN CLEVELAND, OHIO, AND INSTITUTIONAL PHARMACIES IN SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS, AND FREDERICKSBURG, VIRGINIA

Plans Announced for New Hospital in San Antonio

Louisville, KY (February 12, 2007) – Kindred Healthcare, Inc. (the “Company”) (NYSE: KND) today announced the opening of Kindred Hospital - Cleveland in Cleveland, Ohio. In addition, the Company announced plans for a new freestanding hospital in San Antonio, Texas. The Company also announced that its pharmacy division, Kindred Pharmacy Services (“KPS”), has opened new pharmacy locations in San Antonio and Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Kindred Hospital - Cleveland is a 68-bed freestanding long-term acute care (“LTAC’) hospital with a co-located 40-bed subacute unit. The Company leases the facility from the Benjamin Rose Institute, a non-profit health and social service agency that helps older people age with dignity. The Company currently operates a hospital-in-hospital in Cleveland under the name Kindred Hospital - Cleveland - Gateway.

The Company also announced that it intends to open a 70-bed freestanding LTAC hospital in San Antonio. The hospital is expected to open in the second quarter of 2008 after construction and the receipt of certain regulatory approvals. The Company currently operates a freestanding LTAC hospital in San Antonio under the name Kindred Hospital - San Antonio.

KPS San Antonio is an institutional pharmacy that will serve affiliated and non-affiliated long-term care providers in the San Antonio market. KPS also operates two additional institutional pharmacy locations in Texas. KPS Fredericksburg will serve non-affiliated long-term care providers in the Fredericksburg market. In addition to the new pharmacy in Fredericksburg, KPS also operates an institutional pharmacy in Virginia Beach.
