KINDRED HEALTHCARE PROMOTES TWO OFFICERS IN ITS HOSPITAL DIVISION

Louisville, KY (January 5, 2006) – Kindred Healthcare, Inc. (the “Company”) (NYSE: KND) today announced that it has promoted James J. Novak to the position of Executive Vice President, East Group, Hospital Division, and Steven L. Monaghan to Executive Vice President, West Group, Hospital Division.

These are new positions in the hospital division. Both Mr. Novak and Mr. Monaghan previously held the title of Senior Regional Vice President in the hospital division. The East and West Groups were created to support the strategic initiatives and the growth and development in the hospital division.

These promotions recognize the accomplishments of Mr. Novak and Mr. Monaghan and their increased responsibilities in providing leadership to support the growth within the division, which operates 73 long-term acute care hospitals in 24 states across the United States.

Mr. Novak has been with the Company since 1988 and has served in various roles, most recently as Senior Vice President for the South Region of the hospital division since December 1998 and Senior Vice President for the Southeast Region from November 1995 to December 1998.

Mr. Monaghan has served as Senior Vice President for the Midwest Region of the hospital division since January 1999, and previously served as Vice President Finance of the Company from January 1996 to December 1998.

Diaz, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Company. “These appointments will help advance future growth and development in our hospital division and greatly support Kindred’s strategic plan to further integrate clinical programs and sales and marketing initiatives between our operating divisions.”

“Our hospital division is approaching 80 hospitals including those currently open or under development,” said Frank J. Battafarano, Executive Vice President and President of the Company’s Hospital Division. “Jim and Steve have been vital to helping the hospital division grow from 57 hospitals in 2001 and their new roles will be important as we open new hospitals, add new service lines, and expand our managed care business.”
