KINDRED HEALTHCARE OPENS NEW HOSPITAL IN OKLAHOMA CITY AND INSTITUTIONAL PHARMACY IN ORLANDO, FLORIDA

Plans Announced for Additional Hospital in Wayne, New Jersey

Louisville, KY (April 19, 2005) – Kindred Healthcare, Inc. (the “Company”) (NYSE: KND) today announced the opening of Kindred Hospital - Oklahoma City South in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and a new Kindred Pharmacy Services (“KPS”) location in Orlando, Florida. In addition, the Company announced plans to open a hospital-in-hospital (“HIH”) in Wayne, New Jersey.

Kindred Hospital - Oklahoma City South is a 34-bed HIH located on the St. Michael Campus of St. Anthony Hospital and is operated in association with SSM Health Care of Oklahoma. The Company currently operates a freestanding long-term acute care hospital in Oklahoma City under the name Kindred Hospital - Oklahoma City.

KPS Orlando is an institutional pharmacy that will serve non-affiliated long-term care providers in and around Orlando. Prior to the Orlando opening, KPS operated three institutional pharmacy locations in Florida.

The Company also is planning a 38-bed HIH in Wayne, New Jersey, which will be located within St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital, a 229-bed acute-care community hospital. St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital is a member of the St. Joseph’s Healthcare System and provides comprehensive medical and surgical care, emergency and diagnostic services to the residents of Wayne and communities in northern New Jersey. This HIH is expected to open in the third quarter of 2005 after completion of renovations and the receipt of certain regulatory approvals.

“Kindred’s HIH located at St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital, the first in Passaic County, will provide a critically needed service for the residents of northern New Jersey,” said William McDonald, interim President and CEO of the St. Joseph’s Healthcare System. “This partnership with Kindred will improve access for medically complex patients and enhance the continuum of high quality clinical care that St. Joseph’s provides.”
